From sold comps to your real profit, for eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Depop
By Margin & Mailers. Fees checked Oct 26, 2026. Marketplaces change fees, so confirm on each official page before you price (links under Sources below).
☐ Identify the item exactly. Brand, model or style code, size, edition, region, and what's included (box, tags, manual, accessories).
☐ Check authenticity before pricing. Compare labels, tags, stitching and printing with known-genuine examples. If unsure, don't list it yet.
☐ Grade the condition honestly. Note flaws, wear and missing parts. Compare against comps in the same condition, not the best one.
☐ Pull sold prices, not asking prices. On eBay, turn on the Sold Items filter. Where Poshmark, Mercari or Depop let you filter to sold items, check those too.
☐ Use 30 to 90 days of sales. Skip lots, bundles, damaged or for-parts listings, and obvious outliers.
☐ Take the median, not the top sale. Write down the low, median and high.
☐ Cross-check a price guide for your category (for example, PriceCharting for video games), then confirm it against recent sold comps.
☐ Note the sell-through. Many recent sales means it moves; few sales means expect to wait or price lower.

eBay (most categories): 13.6% final value fee + $0.40 per order ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less). Some categories differ, e.g. 8%, no per-order fee, for athletic shoes at $150+ (13.6% under $150); 13.25% for trading cards and select collectibles; 15.3% for books, movies and music. 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each. Charged on the total sale: item + shipping + handling + sales tax.
Poshmark: $2.95 flat on sales under $15; 20% on sales of $15 or more. Charged on the sale price.
Mercari: 10% selling fee. No separate payment processing fee. Listing is free. Instant Pay withdrawal $3 (direct deposit free). Charged on item price + buyer-paid shipping.
Depop: No selling fee for US sellers. 3.3% + $0.45 payment processing. Optional boosted listings: 12%. Charged on item + shipping + sales tax (boost: item + shipping if not using a Depop label).
Watch-outs: eBay adds an extra 6% to final value fees if your account is rated Below Standard (7% after four or more months). eBay can also charge an international fee if you ship abroad without eBay International Shipping. On Depop, buyers pay their own marketplace fee. It doesn't come out of your payout.

☐ Weigh and measure the packed item, including the box and padding. Round up.
☐ Know who pays. Poshmark: the buyer pays a flat $6.49 label for up to 5 lb. Over 5 lb, the seller pays an upgrade ($5 for 5.1–10 lb, $10 for 10.1–15 lb), and Priority Mail packaging triggers a $5 USPS fee. Mercari: prepaid labels by weight, e.g. USPS Ground Advantage from $5.39 (up to 0.25 lb) and $7.99 (1 lb) at Mercari's best rates (package dimensions entered), rates effective Oct 19, 2026. eBay and Depop: you set the shipping charge or offer free shipping, then pay for the label.
☐ Free shipping isn't free. Build the label cost into your price.
☐ Add supplies: mailer or box, tape, labels and padding (estimate per order).
Net payout = price + shipping collected − platform fees − label cost
Profit = net payout − item cost − supplies
Floor price (total to collect) = (item cost + supplies + label + target profit + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee %)
EXAMPLE ONLY. These are made-up numbers, not real sales. An item that sold for $40. The buyer pays $7 shipping where the platform allows it. The label costs $7. Item cost is $8 and supplies are $1. Sales tax is left out. eBay and Depop fees also apply to tax, so real fees run slightly higher.

Floor price example (eBay, $10 target profit): ($8 + $1 + $7 + $10 + $0.40) ÷ (1 − 0.136) = $30.56 total to collect, or an item price of about $23.56 plus $7 shipping.
Fees are only one factor. Buyer audience, category fit and how fast items sell differ by platform, so compare the net payout against your own sell-through.
☐ Median sold price and range written down
☐ Platform fee looked up for your category today
☐ Shipping weight measured; label cost and who pays confirmed
☐ Floor price calculated: you won't accept less
☐ List price set: near the middle to upper sold range for fixed price. For auctions, start no lower than a price you'd accept from a single bidder.
☐ Offer and markdown plan: how much you'll drop, and after how many days
☐ Photos and description show every flaw noted in Step 1
☐ After the sale, log the sold price, platform, fees, shipping and days to sell, so your next price starts from your own data
